#3220 Improve successful Dynamic DNS update log messages
Closed: Fixed None Opened 7 years ago by jstephen.

This issue is reproducible with sssd-1.14.1-3.fc24.x86_64 and a plain install of Active Directory DNS on Windows Server 2012

When Dynamic DNS is successful, the logs are somewhat misleading about success as it appears nsupdate gets called multiple times and fails after the first time. debug_level 5 logging shows the following messages

It only shows failure if someone does a grep for 'Dynamic' in the domain log

It would be nice if we can make the success messages more obvious, or determine why nsupdate fails in subsequent calls.

Hmm, but in this case the DNS update did not succeed even after the reply, right?

One bug I see here is that we print a NULL string:

(Fri Oct 14 16:02:57 2016) [sssd[be[AD.JSTEPHEN]]] [nsupdate_msg_create_common] (0x0200): Creating update message for realm [(null)].

I think we should explicitly say this update uses autodetected (by nsupdate) realm instead of NULL. But do you think we can improve the messages even further? We're open to patches of course, so I'm moving the ticket to the "Patches welcome" milestone.
