It should be possible to configure sssd to use an arbitrary template for subdomains, in the IPa case perhaps it should be retrieved from the ipa server if available there.
Currently the full DNs domain is used by default to generate the homedir, but it may be less confusing if the flatname is used instead as the FLATNAME\username is the login name used by user in preference when coming from windows.
As Sumit said on the IRC, we'll need to amend the expand_homedir option so that it also includes a pattern for the flatname.
