#4557 Please block hal from rawhide
Closed: Fixed None Opened 13 years ago by rhughes.

I've retired hal from rawhide. Please block it from any future composes.

Thanks,

Richard.

I'd prefer to simply following the orphaning process at this point. imo, there's a more-than-slim chance someone else will pick up maintaining this.

I've orphaned this in F15. I'm also not happy on carrying on with HAL in f16; HAL is a huge system daemon with all manner of things going on as root. It's not the kind of package you can just "maintain" by re-packaging up a tarball every few months. I would go as far to say that HAL will be a security problem some time in the future. A lot of the code is hugely legacy and just plain scary.

So is things like running config tools as root, but we still have some. If someone else wants to deal with that problem for non-default installs, I'm inclined to let them, as long as they're walking into it with their eyes open, and we're doing work to make sure we don't need it for anything we intend to ship as a default.

As long as that person understands the undertaking. :-)

I don't mind somebody un-retiring HAL if there is someone desperate for the functionality of a dead project, I just don't think leaving it in limbo until such a person steps up is a great idea.

Nobody has yet volunteered to maintain HAL in F15.

rawhide at this pointa nd when the ticket was filed is targeting f16 i have blocked hal from dist-f16 if you want this removed from f15 also please say so.

I think this should not be removed / blocked from rawhide until the [https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Features/HalRemoval HAL removal feature] was not approved by FESCO.

HalRemoval HAL removal feature was not approved by FESCO.

I'm not sure it really matters if FESCO approves the HAL removal feature, hal is obsolete upstream and maintainerless in F15 and F16+ and will bitrot and fail to build sometime in the future.

I just submitted the Feature to the Feature Wrangler for Fedora 16:
