Please briefly describe the interaction that caused you to file this
ticket:

When a member joins #fedora, they are redirected to #fedora-unregistered if unregistered / unidentified. This leads to confusion on the new joiners part. This also forces the community to maintain a second channel for the sole purpose of explaining that people need to register to join the main channel.

Please note other IRC nicks that are involved in this interaction:

Please describe what action or positive change could be adopted based on
this feedback:
Instead, users should be allowed to join the channel, and be muted by default, they can then speak once they identify. This stops bots / spammers. This also removes the need to maintain a second channel. This also does cause new joiners to think they are in the right channel when in fact they are not. Currently ##systemadmins on freenode has this automated and it works great.

Thanks for your feedback!

This issue has been brought up multiple times and always comes out with registration as the winning option. It doesn't take much effort to register with freenode and join the channel.

Your option to use +m and moderate the channel would require an operator to monitor the channel 24/7 to voice whomever joins, which is not feasible. This will prevent people from getting help more than forcing them to register and identify. This may also stop those who wish to help but cannot because there wasn't an op around to voice them.

Like it or not requiring registration with freenode is the best way to deal with spam and trolls. Although it is not 100% effective it does minimize the undesirables from accessing the channel and causing a ruckus.

There's several problems with one channel that disallows unidentified users from speaking:

  • Users can still join/part with anoying nicks.

  • Unidentified Users will be very confused, because they will join and see people talking, but when they send something all they will get is:

"Cannot send to channel"

Making them go to another channel with instructions on join, in the topic and from the bot will help a lot more than "Cannot send to channel".

We discussed this at todays meeting.

Until freenode gives us a way to customize the cannot send to channel method we are going to keep the current setup in place.

Thanks for your ideas and suggestions.
