One has to use serious hacks to extend navigation.

Navigation should:
- support additional adding of items with correct update of created HTML
- add hook/events in navigation definition, creation, update
- support non-entity facets

This is a part of 3.2 Web UI refactoring which is already being worked on. Moving to the right bucket.
