Had an extensive IRC chat with Martin about the right approach to take. He was not inclined to modify the meaning of query and correctly pointed out that the format of a primary key is only really important when adding a record or changing the key, it makes no difference on a show (where the worst that will happen is the entry won't be found).

We compromised in letting me run the class-specific rules all the time but the param-specific validators only when query=False
