#74 New library bundling exception: python-polygon
Closed: Invalid None Opened 13 years ago by tomspur.

polygon uses a private copy of gpc, which has the 'license':
"""
Non-commercial use: GPC may be used free of charge, without a licence, in any application which is strictly non-commercial (examples: hobbyist, academic research or teaching).
Commercial use: To use GPC in support of for-profit commercial activity (example: product research & development), users must obtain an official GPC Commercial Use Licence from the University of Manchester.

"""

So for non-commercial use, it's allowed to be copied somewhere, where liked and polygon does that and builds against it.

I'm unsure, if that is allowed in first place and if it is, I ask FPC to get an exeption to bundle it (because it's copylib in this case, and it seems upstream want the files to be copied somewhere else...).

Thanks

This software is simply not acceptable for Fedora; we do not accept field of use restrictions. Folks have tried to submit GPC-using software before. (Note that GPC is also a Pascal compiler; GPC-the-compiler does not have license issues.)

Of course I should have said "GPC is also the name of a Pascal compiler". GPC the compiler and GPC the polygon clipping library are two completely different things, and GPC the polygon clipping library does not have an acceptable license.

Ok, thanks...

I'll contact polygon upstream to let them know...

I'm curious as to why you'd think they wouldn't know. The license of this library is no secret.

I need this library for vpython, which is packaged for ubuntu.
vpython used to work without polygon, but now doesn't anymore.

So they should have run into the same problem (and resolve it with writing a own free polygon module) or are less restrictive and don't know about the restrictions in fedora.

Hopefully vpython will work again without polygon and it's not needed anymore...
