#459 Exception for using bundled bullet library for supertuxkart
Closed: Fixed None Opened 9 years ago by hiker.

Hi,

your packager of supertuxkart has decided to replace our bundled and modified bullet version not only with a system-wide bullet version (without our modifications), but also to upgrade from version 2.79 with 2.82. This causes severe bugs, e.g.:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1146456
(I can't be sure if the update or removing our changes caused the bug)

I've opened a ticket https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1146521 to get this fixed, but was just pointed to the policy with no action taken. Please read my detailed comment about the reason for using a bundled library in that library.

Could you please make sure to use our included and patched version of bullet instead of a system-wide one? The changes we did would only make sense for supertuxkart (subtle changes in physics behaviour to improve game play), not for any other application using bullet. It's the recommended way from the bullet developer to bundle bullet.

I've responded in the BZ.

Additionally, please provide answers here to the following:

https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Packaging:No_Bundled_Libraries#Standard_questions

This will make it easier for FPC to evaluate this request.

Thanks!

Thanks, I'll discuss this in the ticket first (https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1146521), since I was told that in Fedora it should typically be the packager's task to ask for the exemption, not us developers. Once we agree in the ticket on how to fix your package, we can proceed.

We discussed this issue in today's FPC meeting. There were several results:

  • irrlicht and bullet have been forked by supertuxkart, the STK upstream has worked in good faith to try to merge changes upstream, but could not, and ended up needing to use forks that are only useful to STK at this time. (We also support their proposal to rename those libraries to further indicate this status.)

  • we are hopeful that the STK upstream will not need to take this action with the glew library, as that would be rather unpleasant to have a fork of in STK.

No bundling exception is required, and supertuxkart is permitted to use their forks of irrlicht and bullet. If glew becomes forked, please open a new FPC ticket for us to discuss that case specifically.

Hi,

thanks a lot. Re glew: we hope to avoid this, but we need a patch to be applied. The patch has been provided (http://sourceforge.net/p/glew/patches/40/) more than a year ago, and it still has not been applied. I've requested an update, but haven't receive an answer yet. Perhaps you can try to convince glew to apply it? We really don't like having to use our own copy ;)

Cheers,
Joerg
