#204 vicodan pushing bits and pieces of mate into stable (updates)
Closed: Invalid None Opened 11 years ago by dp67.

vicodan (Dan Mashal) is pushing bits and pieces of his unfinished Mate DE into the stable repo (updates). His packages are renamed or of a higher release than upstream and want to obsolete packages already installed from an upstream source. Shouldn't he wait until his project is complete so he can push everything at once and not pushing individual packages into stable?

He's not working with upstream very well at all.

I had planned to update when the entire project is updated not by bits and pieces as he sees fit to push.

I don't think there's anything wrong with what he's doing from a Packaging Guidelines point of view. You might want to take this up with FESCo (they meet on Mondays) as it could be something that they would feel is within their purview.

Yes, the problem reported here isn't really within the purview of the packaging committee. Unless you were asserting that he's violated the packaging guidelines this isn't the right place to get help. The only packaging guideline I see that would be on point is http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Packaging:Guidelines#Epochs_from_Third_Party_Repositories; it's rather strongly implied there that it's perfectly fine for packages to update packages from non-Fedora repositories.

This certainly isn't a guideline draft in any case; I've changed the component.

A personal note: this whole Mate thing seems to be the biggest mess I've seen come through the review process in a very long time. I agree that many involved just don't appear to have the best interests of the end users at heart. This just isn't the right place to get anything done about it.
