#137 Bundled library exception for psi-plus package
Closed: Invalid None Opened 12 years ago by ivanromanov.

Hello.

I want to see Psi+ in Fedora distribution. I opened review request https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=709328 but got blocked issue with iris library. Fedora 16 has iris as system library. So I must use this system instead of bundled. Psi+ is patches for original Psi also they modify iris. So I can't use system iris for Psi+. I ask to grant me to use bundled modified iris library in my psi-plus package.

Has the library behaviour been modified? If so, how has it been modified?
Yeah library was modified. I can't build Psi+ with original iris library.
Have a look at attached iris.patch to see all changes.

Why haven't the changes been pushed to the upstream library?
Have the changes been proposed to the Fedora package maintainer for the library?
irc dialog
[20:38:53] <drizt> rdieter: One question for you. Have the changes been proposed to the Fedora package maintainer for the library?
[20:39:27] <rdieter> drizt: I'm the iris pkg maintainer. so, to answer that question: I'm not sure if these changes are acceptable
[20:39:59] <drizt> rdieter: can you explain?
[20:40:59] <rdieter> you yourself said " Rion sad iris modifications not ready for upstream. They are not stable or badly designed or etc."

Could we make the forked version the canonical version within Fedora?
It has no sense. Modified version uses only Psi+.

Are the changes useful to consumers other than the bundling application?
I don't know. But if consumers will want to see such changes in Fedora they can ask it.

Is upstream keeping the base library updated or are they continuously one or more versions behind the latest upstream release?
Iris hasn't any releases. It's only snapshots from git.

What is the attitude of upstream towards bundling?
It's not problem for them.

Does the maintainer of the Fedora package of the library being bundled have any comments about this?
<rdieter> ... it sounds like if we do package psi+, it will indeed require it's own bundled iris (if you can convince fpc)

Is there a plan for unbundling the library at a later time?
Psi-dev hasn't such plan.

Instead of bundling this libiris fork, we've discovered that there is a maintained fork of libiris that is maintained by the Kadu upstream (http://gitorious.org/kadu/libiris). You should see if it is possible to use that fork of libiris (and if not, you should propose the patchset to the Kadu upstream to see if they will take them).

Discussed a bit more in fpc irc, and another approach would be to package this libiris version/fork separately (as a subpkg or whatever), calling it something like psi++-libiris or libiris-psi++ (in a way that does not conflict with the existing libiris package).

It won't work. As I allready have said devoping of iris and psi+ is going in parallel. I can't use another iris than psi+ bundled iris.

Furthemore fork is not good. Kadu should to discuss with Psi team a opportunity to separate libiris to standalone library.
