#556 Need to access all packages that only use the deprecated and now removed V4L1 API
Closed None Opened 13 years ago by mchehab.

= Full Name =

Mauro Carvalho Chehab

= Qualifications =

Upstream maintainer of /drivers/media at the Linux Kernel.
Upstream maintainer for a set of V4L utils

= Rationale =

With the removal of V4L1 support from upstream, several packages broke, some of them silently, since they have their own copy of videodev.h. We're in the proccess of fixing those packages. The idea is to first fix on Fedora rawhide and then submit the fix patches upstream. Due to that, I'll eventually need to get access to those packages, in order to fix them and make they work again.

How many packages are we talking about here? Do you have a list?

Would it make more sense to explain how to fix them for other maintainers?
Or to simply become co-maintainer for those packages?

Sent your request on to the sponsors list for feedback.

Looking at the number of packages your maintain and your reviews (or the lack thereof) I think you are not meeting the criteria to become a proven packager.

How many packages are affected by the V4L1 removal? Have you filed bugs against them and provided patches?

I suggest you apply for co-maintainership of the packages in question.

I'm not sure about the amount of packages affected by the V4L1 removal yet. I've already touched a few of them (zbar, xawtv - and some dependencies), and I'm now working at xorg-x11-drv-v4l (waiting for co-autorship on this one and already submitted a patchset upstream with part of the changes: http://lists.x.org/archives/xorg-devel/2011-February/019042.html). Upstream is also removing V4L1 support on tvtime. I haven't look yet on other media players.

Adding meeting keyword to discuss at tomorrow's fesco meeting.

This request is denied at this time.

We would like you to look at working with existing maintainers (either by supplying patches, or getting them to add you as co-maintainer to commit directly).

If you run into problems down the line, we can revisit this.

Thanks.
