#539 Meeting with the Board regarding strategic goals
Closed None Opened 13 years ago by kevin.

The Board recently discussed overarching goals for the next few Fedora
releases. What we came up with is the following, and we'd like help in
narrowing this list down (or expanding it - if there's something that
you think is critical to Fedora that we didn't think of) to around 5
goals that you think are most attainable within the next several
releases of Fedora. More details on the goals can be found at
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Meeting:Board_meeting_2010-12-13

* GOAL #1: Improve and simplify collaboration in the Fedora Community
* GOAL #2: Provide infrastructure to help people control their

content and devices
* GOAL #3: Improve and encourage high-quality communication in the
Fedora Community
* GOAL #4: It is extraordinarily easy to join the Fedora community
and quickly find a project to work on.
* GOAL #5: Recruiting new / less-common skillsets into the project
(e.g., project managers, designers)
* GOAL #6: "Access from Anywhere" strategy
* GOAL #7: Encourage open standards
* GOAL #8: Improve remote real-time & high-bandwidth collaboration
* GOAL #9: Get more involved with upstream / sidestream FLOSS Communities
* GOAL #10: Improve awareness and utilization of available Fedora
community resources
* GOAL #11: Expand global presence of Fedora among users & contributors
* GOAL #12: Improve education & skill sharing in community
* GOAL #13: Sharing responsibilities (mentorship, documentation of
tasks / SOPs, sharing skills)
* GOAL #14: Evaluate late-breaking technologies for
inclusion/interaction with Fedora
* GOAL #15: Improve Fedora developer experience

We'd like to discuss this at a joint FESCo/Board meeting, perhaps in
two weeks. What we'd like is to find out what goals FESCo believes are
attainable. It needs to be emphasized the list above is subject to
change, if you believe that there is something that's not on that list
which needs to be, PLEASE feel free to add it.

We were thinking that our meeting slot on 1/24 at 2PM eastern could be
devoted to this, however, we are very flexible on moving the time to
accommodate whatever scheduling constraints that exist within FESCo.

We can discuss scheduling and thoughts at our meeting tomorrow. ;)

I'd like to toss out one further suggestion:

How about picking ONE goal for each release for a while. While people can happily work on whatever they want, everyone is urged to do things that further that one goal and set things in place for it. The next cycle another goal is chosen and people work on it (hopefully the last goal has infrastructure in place so it keeps going along). Ie, each release work on a framework to make that goal happen easier moving forward.
Just a thought.

At todays meeting we were receptive to meeting with the Board to talk about this, but not sure on scheduling.

Would the Board be able to meet (some) of us in their regular meeting time on the 17th?
How about meeting with us at our normal meeting time next week? 19th.
Failing those, some of us could make the 24th.

Thoughts?

When are we meeting where now?

Can we please use UTC, because it is easier to calculate for most of us?

Where are we going to meet? http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Board/Meetings doesn't contain relevant info. #fedora-board-meeting?

A#fedora-board-meeting -- I do not know what time. Board is meeting with FAMSCo during the board's regular meeting time on the 17th.

So, I guess our choices are now:

The 24th in the Board's usual meeting time.
Or
The 19th at our usual meeting time if the Board can meet then.

I suspect the 24th is more likely. We could discuss things at our meeting on the 19th and whoever can make it over to the meeting on the 24th could convey our feedback.

Not sure if the 24th will work as this is supposed to be one of the board's phone meetings again. AFAIK they tend to be a little chaotic and having yet more people in the conf room will not make things easier. ;)

The Board is willing to meet on IRC rather than phone so that part shouldn't be a blocker.

Next thing is to hear what FESCo thinks, and to remind FESCo that we want their feedback from the list of 15 (and possible other goals), rather than the "5" preferred by Board

Maybe each of us should pick up 5 favourites and discuss them on next FESCo meeting.

yes, I think thats a great idea. Lets all pick the ones we like, try and come up with 5 we wish to present to the board and then whoever is available can do so in the next board meeting on irc. ;)

Ttoo bad I wont make it for the meeting tonight. My favorites are #1 and #3, improved and simplified collaboration and communication.

Suggestions:
* Communication needs to happen from bottom to top: Decision making starts in the SIG and groups and only goes up to the next level (say FESCo or FAmSCo) if no consensus is reached or decisions need to be backed up.
* The board should only deal with policies and leave the implementation to the people if affects most. When they have a problem they approach the group who is in charge of it, give them the order to draft something and only make the final decision. Discussing things on f-a-b and across other mailing lists is not fruitful.
* same for FESCo btw: We have given decisions to the FPC and others in the past. I think it works quite well and none of us regrets it.
* Board's trac is open for ticket submission (seems to have changed recently)
* More usage of Fedora Talk, as mailing lists and IRC obviously is full of misunderstandings
* Have the CWG as a mentoring body if problems between different bodies arise.

We decided at todays meeting that goals 1, 3, 15 are the ones we would like to focus on.
We would like to have some subset of fesco meet with the board next week on irc about this at their regular meeting time.

We met with the Board on 2011-01-24.
