#350 Fedora User Survey

= Proposal topic =

Fedora User survey

= Overview =

In light of recent discussions concerning Fedora update policy, I suggest holding a simple and straightforward Fedora User Survey on the website. The survey can ask (in plain language) about a few (FESCo) approved topics, perhaps including the updates policy. This way we can definitively find out what the average user (and not the average developer) would like in terms of e.g. updates to existing stable releases (and not rawhide).

= Problem space =

I believe that one of the reasons we lack an updates policy is that it isn't clear exactly what users are wanting or expecting to get in the way of updates for their systems. I think this would be a good opportunity to ask them for input.

= Solution Overview =

A very simple survey on the website. One page of questions, maybe even just one question about updates unless there is anything else worth asking - and in the case of only one question, a quick poll button on the fp.o front page would do the trick. I am specifically not interested in creating a kind of California-like system of referendums on every major issue, but to my recollection the wider user base has never been asked about this topic.

= Active Ingredients =

Fedora Update Policy

= Owners =

I (jcm) guess I can "own" it, but it is just an idea. I am interested to know what FESCo think.

-1,
referendum is just a nice way of saying mob rule.

All we'll get out of that is haphazard and bizarre direction. Nothing focused or even remotely goal oriented and it will include our policies.

If we want a certain type of user then we develop to the needs of that user.

Like the old adage - dress for the job you WANT to have, not the job you have.

That's a perfectly valid opinion. I'm interested in the discussion of this idea, that's all, I don't care so much about that that I can't easily be persuaded it was discussed and dismissed.

@skvidal: Are you only saying that because you don't like the results of Adam Williamson's Fedora Forum poll?

@kkofler: No, because it was outlined several times both on fedora-devel-list and fesco-list that polls on the internet are never representative. Feel free to reply to these concerns on the mailing lists.

Perhaps you could talk to the marketing folks? I think they were looking at setting up a survey as part of their FAD this last weekend.

I would very much prefer any survey be done by people who know how to write/setup surveys.

jcm: Could you talk to marketing folks and see what the status is/provide input?

Whats the status of this ticket? Shall we discuss in the next meeting?

JCM: Any news on the questions in the last comment?

Ok. So I never got the question about marketing. I can look at what happened to the email, but I saw the replies and discussion to this ticket on IRC. I have meanwhile opened another ticket on the same topic. You can merge them if you like, but let's not have the marketing question be a blocker on doing this. Let's get a "yes" or "no" answer on the question of doing a survey. I will contact the marketing folks on Monday about this.

Jon.

ok. I guess I'll close this one in favor of the new one... we can continue there.
