#324 naming conflict: surf
Closed None Opened 14 years ago by cwickert.

Note: I open this ticket on behalf of Simon Wesp. Quoting Simon:

One of my packages "surf" has a naming conflict that was spotted after rewiew: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=554101#c10

surf is a simple webkit browser from surf.suckless.org. Under the name of "surf" it is in Archlinux, BSD and Debian.

The other surf is an algebra software hosted at surf.sourceforge.net. This surf is part of SuSE and Mandriva as "surf".

The third surf is a dead software (dead since 1994) with a fedora incompatible license: http://www.ks.uiuc.edu/Research/vmd/extsrcs/surf.tar.Z

I looked into more than 50 distributions and in the common 3rd party repo for these distributions, but I can't find this one.

Even the algebra software is older, I would prefer the name surf for the browser. I have no problem with a renaming, but I hope to avoid it because I would have to patch at least 7 packages if surf binary gets renamed: tabbed (in Fedora), 3 tabbed plugins (not yet in Fedora) and all the plugins for surf (currently 3, not yet in Fedora).

Before discussing at a meeting: has any attempt been made to contact the two upstreams?
This is really a decision for them to have the chance to make before we do anything about it.

If you can talk either the surf.sourceforge.net folks or the suckless browser folks into changing their name it would make it easier on ALL linux distros.

Can you contact both upstreams and see what they say?

I spoke with upstream (of the browser). He knows there is another software called 'surf', but he doesn't want to rename his project.

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=554101#c18

How about the other upstream? Perhaps they can be convinced to change?

We would like to defer this another week and see what additional data you can get from the other upstream.

It was determined that surf the browser should be renamed in Fedora to be 'surf-browser'.
Including the package name, the binary, man pages, etc.
