#261 Followup on documenting FESCo decisions on wiki
Closed None Opened 14 years ago by alexlan.

= Proposal topic =
User/maintainer-facing wiki pages often lag FESCO policy decisions.

= Overview =

User/maintainer-facing wiki pages often lag FESCO policy decisions meaning that finding out some decisions requires trawling through mailing list archives or obscure wiki pages. Specific example is the decision by FESCo that a re-review is necessary for renaming/splitting packages, but this not documented in the most obvious official pages which most maintainers would look to go for:

= Problem space =

User/maintainer confusion

= Solution Overview =

  1. Once a policy is made, a FESCo member will undertake to document it in a relevant wiki (or other) page by the next meeting
  2. In the next meeting, there will be a review about whether the previous decisions were adequately documented on the wiki, if more time is need it can be deferred or assigned to a different member.

= Active Ingredients =

FESCo members.

A complicating factor here is that some wiki content has multiple overlapping juridictions, e.g. Packaging: namespace is, I think, controlled by the FPC (Packaging Committee) who don't necessarily sit on FESCo. But this shouldn't necessary to know for the readers of the wiki, new maintainers or maintainers not so actively involved in fedora-devel-list or #fedora-devel, so some solution might need to involve FPC.

  • Ticket for renaming: Package Renaming Guidelines https://fedorahosted.org/fesco/ticket/34
  • Also not written up: simplify non-responsive maintainer process https://fedorahosted.org/fesco/ticket/251
  • Talked with nirik on IRC-- maybe we can move from keyword "meeting" to "writeup" when something is decided but needs to be written up in the wiki. Assign someone to write up the decision. At the next meeting have a quick five minute or less "writeup status" where people report on the pages they've modified/created for the writeup, tickets are closed, and anything that's not getting documented canbe reassigned to someone else.
  • FPC and FESCo are separate. FESCo policy and Packaging Guidelines are separate. We should make navigation easier for the user but maintain that separation. I think that's a tangent on this discussion, though -- I'd like to solve this as part of the Packaging Guidelines hackfest at FUDCon Toronto: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/FUDCon:Toronto_2009_Packaging_Guidelines_Hackfest

It was decided that for FESCo policy decisions, a new keyword in the ticketing system will be introduced, 'writeup' as discussed above, and the ticket will be assigned to a specific person. At the beginning of each meeting, all such tickets will be poked.
