This will be discussed at the 5/15 FESCo meeting

IMHO this should be blocked until/unless there's evidence that polkit-qt and PolicyKit-kde are going to get ported upstream in time for F12. PolicyKit integration is one of the advertised features of KDE 4.3, it would be bad to break that. Breaking PolicyKit-kde would also be a regression from F11.

Not exactly sure what input FESCO can provide here; the PolicyKit version we ship in F11 has been discontinued for quite a while and will only receive security updates. It's a dead end, no-one is working on the code. That much is clear if you have been following the project.

So I'm (since I'm the maintainer of the packages in Fedora and coincidentally also the upstream maintainer) moving to the new PolicyKit version no matter what and if GNOME, KDE or other PolicyKit users haven't caught up, they can simply just rip out PolicyKit support. FWIW, there's plenty of time for GNOME and KDE and others to port to the new version, especially since there's been a couple of pre-releases of this stuff already and Rawhide will see these versions soon (the week after next) and F12 is a bit out anyway.

If people (like, say, Kevin Koffler) really want to, they can always create compat-PolicyKit packages for PolicyKit 0.9.x (what we're shipping in F11). Though, I, for one, is going to get involved in that...

I assume you WILL NOT be getting involved in that, correct?

Eh, yeah, your assumption is right. I meant s/is going/is not going/. Sorry for the confusion.

A compat-PolicyKit is not going to be of much use if all the system services use the new one.
