#1452 F23 System Wide Change: Two Week Atomic
Closed None Opened 8 years ago by jkurik.

For 2015-07-01 FESCo meeting:

Fedora Atomic Host is an implementation of the Project Atomic pattern for a specialized operating system for the deployment of containerized applications. For the past two Fedora releases, we've included an Atomic Host cloud image as a non-blocking deliverable. However, upstream Atomic is moving very fast — by the end of the alpha, beta, final stabilization cycle Fedora uses, the released artifact is basically obsolete. Additionally, the Project Atomic team at Red Hat would like to do their ongoing development work in the Fedora upstream, and the six-month release cycle does not lend itself to that.

This change moves Atomic away from the main Fedora 6-month distribution release, and instead to separate releases every two weeks on a new web site, http://atomic.fedoraproject.org/

Note that while http://atomic.fedoraproject.org/ is in the summary, the actual name and location for that is still under discussion with the stakeholders -- that's covered in the details.

I have a personal emergency to tend to this afternoon and may not be able to make it to the meeting. I'll be happy to answer any questions anyone has in this ticket or otherwise.

  • AGREED: F23 System Wide Change: SELinux policy store migration is
    approved (+5, 0, -0) (thozza, 19:05:55)

I think above result is just accidently pasted from meeting log. The correct result here is

  • AGREED: F23 System Wide Change: Two Week Atomic is approved (+6, 0, -0) (thozza, 19:10:30)

Oh yes, thank you for correction.

Status update: https://lists.fedoraproject.org/pipermail/cloud/2015-September/005862.html

tl;dr — this isn't in production yet. But it's also non-blocking since Atomic itself is not release-blocking. The hope is to have it ready by F23 release, and if we miss that, two weeks later.

I'm going to reopen this to bring more visibility to the above. Note that Cloud WG hasn't finalized plans to change edition focus from Base to Atomic, so that's a separate thing. That means we're basically talking about what goes on https://getfedora.org/en/cloud/download/atomic.html.

The hope, still, is to have this in place by the F23 G.A. But, clearly, it's not there for the beta. From the message above:

Plan A: at F23 release, have images produced via this Two-Week Atomic
be what's shown on that getfedora download page, rather than the images
from the general gold compose ("traditional")

Plan B: at F23 release, use the images from the traditional compose.
Switch to Two-Week images two weeks later.

The system works from nightlies, so plan B would kick in if by some threshold (say, a week out?) we're not successfully producing these images with the new system through the whole pipeline to staging.

FESCo, are you okay with this plan?

Oh, also, I have a conflicting meeting tomorrow and probably will not be at FESCo meeting. I'll be happy to answer any questions here, though.

  • AGREED: mattdm's proposal is accepted (5,0,1) (dgilmore, 18:30:53)

Update from the team: it looks like we're going for Plan B from comment above: we'll ship the "traditional process" bits at GA, with website updates about new lifecycle plan, and then cut over to the new process the following two weeks.
