#1333 OpenJDK maintainer refuses to address F20->F21 upgrade bug
Closed None Opened 9 years ago by sgallagh.

= phenomenon =
As tracked by https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1130247 there is a bug in OpenJDK where if you had installed the OpenJDK 8 packages on Fedora 20, upgrading to Fedora 21 will result in a broken Java environment.

= reason =
The OpenJDK maintainer refuses to fix the upgrade bug (and has now closed this BZ as WONTFIX twice), despite the seriousness of the issue. His statement is "As jdk8 is development revie in f20, I do not wont to support this update." which is not a sufficient answer in my (and other Java users') opinion. His assertion is effectively that anyone who installed that package in Fedora 20 deserves a broken system and a difficult recovery (you have to completely remove the OpenJDK packages and reinstall it fresh in order to restore Java to the system).

= recommendation =
The fix is known: "The fix to this issue is to add cleaning scripts to all alternatives we use. It is making the specfile terribly messy."
I recommend that FESCo declare this bug a blocking issue and insist that the maintainer address it.

FESCo agreed today to ask jvanek to make f20->f21 upgrades result in a working system, reasonably similar to a clean f21 install.

FESCo also declares BZ1130247 to be a blocker for F21 Beta. (+6)
