#1289 F21 System Wide Change: Playground repository - https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/Playground_repository
Closed None Opened 9 years ago by jreznik.

For the 2014-04-23 meeting as FESCo requested escalation to the System Wide Change category and asked for more discussion.

The Playground repository gives contributors a place to host packages that are not up to the standards of the main Fedora repository but may still be useful to other users. For now the Playground repository contains both packages that are destined for eventual inclusion into the main Fedora repository and packages that are never going to make it there. Users of the repository should be willing to endure a certain amount of instability when using packages from there.

I don't like the phrasing "packages that are never going to make it there", but the concept of the Playground repository is sound.

My only real concern is that the Playground repo has a dependency on DNF+the COPR plugin, which has not yet been committed for Fedora 21. I think we need to get a sense of whether that will happen before committing to this Feature. Last I heard, DNF was still targeted at F22.

Ok, phrasing might be improved, because there will be lot of packages, which make it :)

True, dnf is targeted as default for F22, but you can install it for F21 and use dnf and/or yum as you wish.

Right, but it seems odd to me that our announcement for this would effectively be:

"We're advertising this awesome new repository feature that depends on this unfinished core tool!"

As much as I want to see the Playground land, I think it needs to be coordinated with the DNF shift. I'd argue that it should perhaps become a preview feature that we should talk about on -devel, but make it a fully-announced Change for F22.

The other side of doing it that way is that we give developers time to get their packages into the Playground in advance of a GA of the Playground.

I'm fine with saying it's just Beta or Tech preview. At least we can set up policies and use tests in Taskotron.

Change is approved. (+6,0,0)

I'd additionally really like some stats to be kept... so we can see how popular coprs in playground are.

Is keeping stats for this a Fedora Infrastructure ticket?

copr bug would make more sense, IMHO:
