#1119 Proven packager
Closed None Opened 10 years ago by tdabasin.

Please add tdabasin to provenpackagers group

Many thanks,
Tomas

Normally, people put some sort of reason why they want provenpackager in their submission.

See https://fedorahosted.org/fesco/ticket/1116 or https://fedorahosted.org/fesco/ticket/1114 for examples.

Hi apologies about the vague request, the reason I'd like to be on proven packagers group is because I'm involved with packaging python-pyramid web framework for epel6, pyramid development is pretty rapid and dependencies change all the time, juggling dependencies for epel6 is particularly complicated. Also https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=970434

Many thanks,
Tomas

I'm not sure why changing dependencies requires proven packager status. Looking at the dependencies on F-19 for python-pyramid it doesn't look vast and there's often reasons why maintainers leave EPEL-6 versions at the ones they are and don't aggressively upgrade them without a good reason to do so and those requests should generally be filed as bugs IMO.

-1 from me

I don't see an advantage to being a provenpackager in this situation, unless you're suggesting you need to arbitrarily take over other peoples' libraries to make python-pyramid work. That seems like it would only lead to disaster. I'd rather you simply work with the other maintainers to ensure that your changes meet their needs as well.

I completely agree with pbrobinson and sgallagh. I think you should become comaintainer on the packages you depend on if you can persuade the current maintainers that you won't break things.

-1 from me too. Rationale: Upgrading packages you don't own on EPEL (!) strikes me as a very bad idea. EL is intentionally more conservative than Fedora, and EPEL is supposed to be no exception. Whether to upgrade a package there really needs to be the maintainer's call. And you won't be able to upgrade core RHEL packages anyway, no matter what level of access you get in EPEL. So you may have to just stick to an older python-pyramid on EPEL if the dependencies of newer versions cannot be satisfied.

-1s present => scheduling for tomorrow's meeting.

Hi all, many thanks for your time reviewing my request. I have misunderstood the group membership purpose and scope. I'll work with the package maintainers to resolve any issues.

Regards,
Tomas
