#5241 askfedora email notification appears to be broken
Closed: Will Not/Can Not fix 5 years ago Opened 7 years ago by chrismurphy.

= bug description =

I never receive email notifications. I can't tell if this is account specific, or across the entire askfedora user base, but at least one other user doesn't get daily emails despite settings requesting such.

= bug analysis =

https://ask.fedoraproject.org/en/question/86449/how-to-get-askfedora-email-notifications/

I've just set all items to Instantly, we'll see what happens, but I do not really want to be notified instantly. I'd rather be notified daily.

= fix recommendation =

Just to be a bit more clear, this has never worked for me. I've never gotten any notifications from ask.fedoraproject.org. I've changed the email address settings a couple times and that hasn't fixed the problem either.

When I change from Daily to Instantly, I start immediately getting emails. Upon reverting to Daily, they stop. So it appears specifically Daily notification is what doesn't work.

This strongly suggests that the daily email cron job was never configured. (https://github.com/ASKBOT/askbot-devel/blob/master/askbot/cron/askbot_cron_job)

Indeed. We had a number of other jobs, but not that one. ;)

Should be fixed now... please re-open if still not working.

So, are people going to get three years' worth of nightly email?

I sure hope not. Checking now...

Thanks to some magic hackery from Patrick we are running the script now once to discard all those old ones, then we will be set to have it run daily moving forward. ;)

Awesome. Thanks everyone!

Sorry but I'm still not seeing a daily email notification.

The script is still running to get rid of the old emails.
It needs to go through three years' worth of email and calculate which emails it would have sent where we to send them all now.
After it gets through that queue, we will enable the actual sending.

Oops, I didn't realize that was still running.

and... it was still going. ;(

This is obviously not going to work out, so we are going to look at another approach now. ;(

We are moving our ask instance to an upstream managed version.

We can perhaps revisit this after that transition has taken place.
