#467 show live media before install media

So both

http://fedoraproject.org/get-fedora
http://fedoraproject.org/get-prerelease

are very nice. Good job on that.

I do wonder if offering install media before live media is a good idea. I mean, the live media is much easier to install for first time users plus it enables such users to try Fedora without having installing to disk. It's probably important to fix this as many users won't know the difference and they'll just click on what's first on the list.

Thanks for considering.

FWIW I tend to agree, even if I'm the one making the install media. The live images are a much better experience.

Can we do normal installs with the live media yet?

I guess what I mean by that is, is the install media now a drop in replacement for our old install media (install, pkg select, upgrade, etc)

There are no rpm's on the live media, no, so you can't

  1. upgrade an existing system with network access
  2. customize at install time what you want

My opinion is that 1. is not terribly useful as most people have 3rd party packages as well (so they need network access). And 2. is kinda not important as you can use pirut/yum/PackageKit after the install to customize it.

Either way, my opinion is that 1. and 2. is not something that our target audience for these sites (get-fedora) would do. Reasoning is that if you went to these sites in the first place, chances are that you don't have an existing Fedora system.

(What could be nice is a way for the livecd to launch anaconda to do an upgrade of an existing system with fetching the rpm's from the network. But that's an anaconda feature request if anaconda doesn't do that already. I think it does and maybe we just need to have an icon "Upgrade Existing System" if we detect there's one or more Fedora installations on the system. I don't know.)

s/with/without/ for "upgrade an existing system with network access" btw. Sorry.

Hopefully this will be addressed with the get-fedora update. If that isn't ready by F10 GA, I'll start a discussion on websites-list about getting that moved.

This is done with the new get-fedora pages.
