#3496 Update Ask Fedora to askbot 0.7.43+
Closed: Fixed None Opened 11 years ago by mattdm.

= problem =

We have a lot of spam in Ask Fedora. This is bad because:

  • spam is evil
  • it makes the site look unmaintained
  • it buries real questions and answers

= analysis =

Askbot 0.7.43 introduces a "basic moderation" feature (http://askbot.org/doc/moderation.html) which will help mitigate the problem by allowing site members in good standing to flag and, given enough reputation, even delete spam posts.

= enhancement recommendation =

Please update to that version.

Happy to update it, but we use the EPEL packages.

Can you get the EPEL maintainer to update it? Or if they are inactive, get a active maintainer to update it?

Well, the good news is that the EPEL maintainer is Rahul Sundaram.

The bad news is that upgrading askbot involves running a database update command, and I'm not sure if it can easily happen automatically, which would make an update in EPEL undesirable.

I'll ask.

Yeah, we have done this in the past... it's sadly the status quo in the django world.

If it's best to keep the EPEL version constant to avoid disruption for other people using it, can we go outside of using the RPM for our own use?

Because that's the status quo, webapps and sane package distribution are hard to mix.

In cases of applications like this where every single update requires a db change/update, we have just allowed it.

Otherwise it would be impossible to package at all. ;)

Mattdm, anyone who is a moderator or admin could flag or delete spam posts and you don't need the latest version for that. However the newer version does have some features we requested and even patches Fedora contributors have created! I am testing it locally and we can update the EPEL version soon and get it deployed in ask.fp.o

Yeah, my understanding is that the newer version allows regular users with a certain rep to flag the posts, not just mods, which is much more useful.

Yes indeed. This was one of my feature request in fact :-)

This done. :) We need to determine any config changes we need to make now. ;)
