#3154 Bad download.fedora.redhat.com in our documentation
Closed: Fixed None Opened 12 years ago by adelton.

= bug description =

The DNS record for download.fedora.redhat.com no longer exists. Yet, at least http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/EPEL/FAQ still recommends it as The way to get EPEL.

= bug analysis =

I've been told by Red Hat's IT that download.fedora.redhat.com has been depreciated by Fedora for a long time. If that's the case, all occurences of that name should have been updated long time ago.

= fix recommendation =

Ask Red Hat to put that DNS record back.

Update documentation.

Make the deprecation of that hostname well known and give people enough time to update.

I could go and fix that wiki/EPEL/FAQ page but the same hostname is likely to appear on other pages as well (I know we have it on Spacewalk's HowToInstall page, copied from wiki/EPEL/FAQ). So the problem is that the most autoritative EPEL documentation page has been wrong for a long time, and other projects have used the wrong URL. We need to give them time to update things, so fixing just the wiki/EPEL/FAQ page without making more noise about it won't cut in.

I had actually removed the faq page in my reorg of epel wiki stuff, Seems someone decided to just revive the page. ;(

Will get it cleaned up.

ok, so I have:

  • Cleaned up the EPEL faq (note that I didn't think that page still was being used/existed, or i would have fixed it before. The main EPEL page lists how to use: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/EPEL and has since it existed).

  • Cleaned up any other pages in the wiki (there's one more pending that needs someone from Packaging to fix).

  • Made a blog post about retiring the name.

  • Made an announce list post asking everyone to update their links.

Please update your spacewalk info, or (much better) point to the main EPEL front page with the correct info.

Sorry if this has caused any problems. Feel free to let us know if there is any more we can do.
