#68 Reconstructing the Campus Ambassadors program and campus outreach
Closed: Moved 6 years ago Opened 7 years ago by jflory7.

Phenomenon

Recently, the increased effort in bringing back the Campus Ambassadors program is circulating around Fedora. There is a ticket in the FAmNA Trac and it is part of the focus of the University Involvement Initiative.

This ticket aims to be the source of discussion for analyzing the renewal of the Campus Ambassadors program and centralizing discussion about this for a global application.

Background Analysis

The Fedora Council recently checked in on this objective at a recent meeting. This also initiated some discussion in the #fedora-ambassadors channel on 2016-03-30.

Excerpt from meeting

"We'd like to target 3 schools in each region, with three 'campus ambassadors' in each region starting in Fall 2016. This assumes we have a healthy enough ambassador program to support targetted outreach in each region.

There would be 2 FADs' proposed, one for developing EDU materials for both outreach and Campus Ambassador Training, and one for actually training the CA's. Many Ambassadors are adding themselves to the [https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Objectives/University_Involvement_Initiative#Campus_Ambassadors Campus Ambassadors section] of the wiki page, to help give an idea of what contacts we have at what universities across the world."

My interpretation

The core idea is that we have three Campus Ambassadors (at an ABSOLUTE minimum) in all of the regions of the world, totaling up to 12 in the world. If these requirements can be met, then this initiative will have greater traction from higher level in Fedora / Red Hat.

These Campus Ambassadors would be responsible for organizing events at universities in their local regions at least once a quarter (or on a regular basis). They would be responsible for planning, events, and outreach with others in their region (but there is definitely some responsibility on the individual Campus Ambassador's part too). I think this approach is following more like the Mozilla Student Ambassador Program in a sense, but still different. It's separated from the regular Ambassadors program in that there are some more action-based requirements in place, but it is still part of the sub-project as a whole.

I talked briefly about this with @decause at a hack session, and the details still need to be written down and documented, unless that's already been done somewhere I am not aware of.

The number of three Campus Ambassadors was intended as the bare minimum for this program to be successful. If there are lots more people interested and engaged and ready for something like this... "bring it on!"

Implementation Recommendation

That's what this ticket is for! This ticket intends to be an aggregate place to host discussion about this objective and get feedback from many others in the project.

I'm sure @decause probably has the most to contribute to this ticket in particular (therefore, as the current owner of the EDU Objective, he is being set as the owner of this ticket). I'm also CCing others who expressed interest tonight in helping contribute to this specifically.

Additional notes

Additional notes about this initiative is in decause's EDU Refresh Etherpad.

Discussed in 2016-04-12 meeting.

Next steps

This ticket has also been discussed in prior meetings. Right now, the next steps are going to be getting the big plans for the coming future into a more parseable, readable format. There is a lot of raw data in the Etherpad, but it is not organized in an easily presentable way. Once the raw data is converted into the wiki page, we can move forward with determining the next steps.

Open for help!

This would be a great action item for a member looking to dive in to help with. I would also classify this as some wiki gardening too. If you're interested in assisting with this part of the ticket, please let us know in a meeting, on the mailing list, or in the IRC channel.

Just to be consistent, the wiki has been updated with the necessary content. The draft was merged with the original wiki on consent from @jflory7 and @decause.

Discussed in 2016-05-31 meeting.

For the time being, we have decided to remove this ticket from our meeting agenda until we receive more details and information about the plans for the EDU FAD. We will revisit this ticket again soon.

Ticket closed

Since this ticket was originally filed when FAmSCo was only just started to reconvene for the first time in a couple years, we had started this discussion with Remy, who was also the leading Council member of the University Involvement Initiative. Now that we have an actively meeting FAmSCo, I filed an upstream ticket for this topic in their Pagure. See more information in their Pagure about this program.
