#29 G11n - proposal for the group revitalization
Closed: Fixed None Opened 8 years ago by mailga.

Talking with the G11n leader (Noriko), came out the need to revive the group that suffers of lack of contributions.
This is not a big problem for the English native people, but could be a brake on the Fedora growth in the whole world, so is just the case to think about some incentives to give to contributors.

We chose to suggest a complete fund for a worldwide event (FUDCon/Flock/FAD) to the best g11n contributor.

Of course we thought also to some rules e.g.:

  • reward gave to a single user
  • strong evaluations
  • give a talk in the event we offer.

Those are only draft of rules, to be tuned, but the most important is the third.
We know that a requirement for get the budget in order to attend to an event is a talk/workshop accepted but in this case we could accept the talk/workshop without any voting.
The award is just this: talk/workshop approved by default.

Of course Noriko can edit this ticket at any time.

In a conversation with Remy we determined that this could be a Council decision and if people agree with the idea here we can ask the Council approval.

Note that there's no further budgeting request since the best contributor will give a talk; the only issue is giving him/her a slot without any vote from the community (differently from what happen usually for the talk proposals).

Any comment is welcome.

Gabri

I think lets keep selection of talk to the respective committee. If person is active/lead contributor i think there is not much problem to get his talk selection as per criteria for Flock+FUDCon.

Once talk is selected we should at least provide travel budget to respective contributor from G11N side.

Yes, lets discuss further on this in DevConf

Ticket added to 2016-01-26 agenda.

Discussed in 2016-01-26 meeting.

== Ticket status: Deferred ==
It was expressed in #fedora-g11n and also on the mailing list about coordinating a time for noriko and decause to meet in-person at DevConf to help collaborate on how to tackle this issue. After their discussion, details will be shared either in the next meeting or in this ticket about what the next steps are.

'''Discussed in [https://meetbot.fedoraproject.org/fedora-meeting-2/2016-02-09/commops.2016-02-09-16.56.html 2016-02-09 meeting].'''

At DevConfCZ, noriko and pravins met with decause. Together, they were able to establish on-boarding paths and processes for the G11n team. Part of what is planned is organizing a vFAD (virtual Fedora Activity Day) and also having a pre- and post-vFAD promotion strategy for the Community Blog to gain more interest.

As of now, the first approximate due date for an article draft is around March 22nd. We will check in again on this ticket next week for some additional follow-up.

I forgot we wanted to do a follow-up on this at our next meeting. Adding it to today's agenda.

We briefly reviewed this ticket in today's meeting as a check-in. We're planning on doing more specific organization on the article and a G11n vFAD at our next meeting on Feb. 23rd.

Also, here's a link to [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xEHa0nDjJvg Pravin's G11n talk] at DevConfCZ!

Looks like i missed it :(
Let me know if anything required from my side.

I just had discussion with Zanata members Alex. We are planning meeting with Fedora Infra (Ralph, Patrick..) for enabling FedBus for Translations in Zanata and also if any other pending stuff.

How can I watch this ticket?

No worries, you didn't miss much this meeting – next week, we will be going into a deeper discussion about the G11n vFAD. If any of you are available to attend next week's meeting, 2016-02-23 at 17:00 UTC, you would be very welcome to attend!

= Getting a hangout scheduled =
We determined that the best way to get this finished is getting noriko and pravins in an audio / video call sometime soon. CommOps is planning a scheduled power session again on Wednesday (to be added to Fedocal soon). Getting noriko and pravins in on this would help considerably! We're looking at running this from 23:00 - 2:00 UTC (18:00 - 21:00 US EST).

Let's coordinate with noriko and pravins ASAP to see if they're around in this timeframe!

It is almost 14:00UTC, 23-Feb Tuesday (24:00, 24-Feb, Wednesday my time in Brisbane, Australia). I possibly can make my self available 23:00UTC or after 24-Feb Wedbesday (09:00, 25-Feb, next morning Thursday my time in Brisbane), pls ping me on #fedora-g11n at freenode. I am not sure Pravin can come, he is based in Pune, India.
I have no problem 23:00-2:00UTC on any Wedensday, just wanna know in advance. I recommend to include Alex from Zanata team, so that the integration can be discussed.

I can make it if its 9am BNE 25/Feb. Please do let me know.

Hi Pravins, Alex stopped in and he and Remy fired through some ideas and plans for G11n. I'm sure there will be some more detailed info here soon. For now, I'm going to share the raw text from tonight's Etherpad.

= Report published =

The report about the vFAD event can be found on the [https://communityblog.fedoraproject.org/fedora-translation-sprint-5-days-50-members-20-thousand-words/ Community Blog]. Awesome work all, and thanks to the G11n team for putting together this fantastic event.

It seems like the event was an overall success to me. As we mentioned in our last meeting, the last item for this ticket to be completed was the publication of the event report. Since that is now completed, this ticket will be closed. Huzzah!
