#470 Request a badge for localization members l10n
Opened 7 years ago by fredlima. Modified a year ago

Badge description (like "You added a co-maintainer to a package. BFF!"):

L10n new members of a language team in zanata.

After the new member have his subscription approved on a language team on zanata, I think he deserves a badge

Help the badges team understand what this idea is all about. If this badge is awarded for certain kinds of activities:

1) What are those activities?
translating Fedora websites, packages, spins to other language than english

2) Who is doing them (are they packagers? translators? newcomers? veterans? users? sponsors?)
translators

3) Why are they doing them (is this a means to a different end?)
they brings fedora to another languages

4) When do they do them (every day? once a year?)
every time a new member has subscription approved on one language team in zanata

5) How do they do them (by talking in IRC? by running commands in the console? by using a web interface?)
using web interface zanata

Lastly, do you have any ideas for artwork concepts?
a dictionary

I like this idea!
Instead of being linked to Zanata, the badge could be awarded when one is approved on "Translation CVS Commit Group", on FAS. I think it's easier to automatically award badges this way.

Translation CVS commit is not used anymore. There is good chances that many new members have account in Zanata but not approved for Translation CVS commit.

Rather:
How about exporting FAS accounts from Zanata and award them badges for L10N members??

I think soon, Zanata will communicating over FedBus and this can be automated, so as soon as someone do commit in Zanata, first badge he will earn will be Localization team member.

But as of now good to go ahead with exported users name from Zanata. Also created ticket on G11N trac. https://fedorahosted.org/G11N/ticket/26

Thanks fredlima for initiating this :)

fredlima Do you have any idea about the design? We have found it difficult in few others G11N related badges design ideas and simply came up with writing word. "l10n", "i18n" and "g11n"

It seems like a duplicate of [https://fedorahosted.org/fedora-badges/ticket/221 #221], with the first "Traveler badge": Traveler Starter ("You accepted on language team")

#221 is different badge. This badge is for becoming Translation team members. On the other hand #221 is for contribution series. i.e. You did 5, 500, 5000 string translations.

#221 has dependencies on Zanata FedMsg sync, which mostly get started by November/December.

I will recommend please proceed with this badge. Translation is big group and definitely need more motivation with more badges.

Hi, taking a look at this ticket now. My biggest question before we proceed is if this badge is possible to automate. Awarding a badge to every single translator manually in Fedora seems like a tedious task, and I'm afraid this badge would fall victim to the same thing as some of our other ones, where people forget to award it over time.

If there is any kind of FAS group for translators, this will be easy to automate. If there is no FAS group and we want to use Zanata, we will have to wait for fedmsg support, which if I remember, was forecasted for January or February. Until we solve how to automate this badge, I would recommend we hold off on designing any artwork yet, just so we can be sure this badge can be deployed successfully.

I'm going to mark it as "Not yet possible", but if there is a FAS group, this is an easy one to do. If not, let's revisit this ticket once Zanata is worked into fedmsg in the coming months.

Thanks!

My concern with this was with Pravin's previous comment about the group not being used anymore. If translators are still being sponsored into the group, that's fine, but if it's not being used or kept up-to-date, it won't make a difference.

If you want to edit the wiki, you need to belong to a group. Access rights are actually given to groups.

If you have a fas account, you need to belong to a group for administrative purposes. Perhaps someone from infrastructure may clarify this point.

For the wiki, this is correct. I don't think FAS membership is required, but it's helpful for things like this and also helping see who is active in a particular group in FAS itself. I saw discussion about this starting [https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/trans@lists.fedoraproject.org/thread/V5XCEIORQMACRXWHRJ2ICSXZ77UDI3S2/ on the translations mailing list].

In [https://meetbot.fedoraproject.org/fedora-meeting/2016-11-15/translations.2016-11-15-19.30.html yesterday meeting] we agreed with majority to use cvsl10n as a group to award badges for translation team members.

It also serving one more purpose for translation team, often new members miss subscribing to CVSl10n group, having badge for it motivate them to complete that steps.

Please go ahead with implementation.

Hey @maryshak1996! Thanks for starting to work on this badge design.

This is a member badge, so the outer ring should be pink and the background a light green.

Can you try a version where the sun burst is coming from directly behind the book?

Try playing around with the book colors.. right now, the L10n is blending a bit with the green rectangle its on. Try giving the letters a stroke, or putting it directly on the blue book.

Can't wait to see what you come up with!

Hi, Any update here?
Long time pending issue. I think most of the things are done now.

There's no more design updates from my perspective; @riecatnor is there anything else that you think needs to be added/ changed?

@maryshak1996 lookin' good :)

A couple quick things. Make the book a lil bit smaller, for some breathing room between the graphics and the edges. Right now the green, pink and blue on the book is clashing. Try taking the green square off and make the lettering white. Make the lettering a bit smaller, and space the letters out, right now they are crowded.

Thanks!

This badge seems to be needed to be automated. @fredlima @pravins do we automate this or would you want this to be manually awarded.

You can manually award now till zanata messages are not on fedmsg. how does this sound?

We should automate this and give to members of cvsl10n group and all new members of this group should get this Badge.

Quick discussion with @sayanchowdhury and @jibecfed , We need to cleanup of cvsl10n members and Zanata users. (match) before making it live.

hi there, let's solve this long time issue, would someone share the svg files? I can't access it anymore.

As far as I know, I have all required information to manually grant this badge to our translators.

Would someone be interested in rework this artwork?

There could be inspiration from https://pagure.io/design/issue/557 ? That more focus on the fact localization is about people communicating?

Or something that takes some really weird scripts like Maya? (Idea take from: https://eighthave.gitlab.io/info/2020/04/23/figuring-out-crowdsourced-translation-of-websites/)

The idea? I feel like "l10n" on a book is a bit minimalist. I would like our contributors to be proud of it. Localization is a fight for culture.

Hi,

Is someone working on this badge idea?

Recently a similar issue [#762] was closed.

Hi @smeragoel there is no template for the badge

Hi @duchessolive it looks like we need to come up with a totally new design for this badge! This badge is for contributors working on translations, so it should be a concept related to that activity.
- There was a suggestion to take inspiration from this previous design. There's a lot going on in that design and we need to come up with something a bit more simple... maybe a world with two speech bubbles?
- We could also explore something related to the translation sprint badge design. It could be an "f" and then another letter character with the arrows cycling?
- The person requesting the badge also suggested a dictionary, which is a nice concept, but the last design didn't come out as impactful as those working on translations hoped. So we could continue to explore this idea as well
