#414 Badges for Community Blog authors
Closed: Pushed None Opened 8 years ago by bee2502.

Badge description (like "You added a co-maintainer to a package. BFF!"):
Badge Series for Community Blog authors
https://communityblog.fedoraproject.org/

Help the badges team understand what this idea is all about. If this badge is awarded for certain kinds of activities:
1) What are those activities?
Like Fedora Magazine Badge Series, but for Community Blog.

2) Who is doing them (are they packagers? translators? newcomers? veterans? users? sponsors?)
Fedora contributors

3) Why are they doing them (is this a means to a different end?)

Unlike Fedora Magazine which is for general news about Fedora OS, Community Blog is for News and updates for about the Fedora Project community that develops supports and promotes Fedora.
-Posts would lead to information spread about what is happening in every nook and corner of Fedora Developer Community.

-Badge would signify high community participation and would encourage community engagement amongst other contributors.

  • Promote Community Blog amongst Fedora contributors

4) When do they do them (every day? once a year?)
anytime. more the better.

5) How do they do them (by talking in IRC? by running commands in the console? by using a web interface?)

Authoring posts to be published on Community Blog

Lastly, do you have any ideas for artwork concepts?

Community Bonding. Sort of like friends meeting and talking. Something to show information spread too.

As decause suggested, instead of alloting badges based on views/authored article which generates traffic on the site , lets concentrate the Community Blog Badges to be more community-engagement oriented .

Badges would be allocated for continuous contributions like Wiki series.
"Three posts on Community Blog this week - you are on a writing streak! "
More details on idea here https://fedorahosted.org/fedora-badges/ticket/109

Articles will be moderated before publishing on Community Blog.

Hi Mary! Great first design, welcome to badge creators =) It now looks a bit like ghosts (probably because they are coming out of the houses like that), maybe we would want to have something more like speech bubbles? Or replace houses with badgers / pandas to represent contributors. What do you think?

Hi, and thank you! I definitely see what you mean with the speech bubbles; I'll try tweaking those first, post those changes, and then if it still looks a little bit off, I'll try using the pandas/ badgers.

Ok, so I made a couple different tweaks to the overall look of the badge; had some fun with badgers and moved onto a different idea for the speech bubble/ thought bubble. Which do you think would be the better idea to move forward? Or maybe a few elements each?
Pandas: [[Image(badge_ticket#414_concept2.png)]]
Houses: [[Image(badge_ticket#414_concept3.png)]]

I'm personally a fan of the first one with the two pandas, although probably would be a good idea for another Design Team member to give an affirmative answer there.

Also, just one thing to consider too since this will be a series, there should probably be a place to include a numerical progression as you earn each badge, e.g. "1" "2" "5" "15" "50" "100".

Nice work on these!!

ehm you may not alter the trademarked Fedora logo with a pink line around ;)

I like the badgers! =) Let's not modify Fedora logo that way, though. Second that, @gnokii. Looks a bit squished, too, or is it just me?

I just made some variations to the one with the badgers, took away the pink stroke on the Fedora log, added an example of the number progression that @jflory7 mentioned (tried to keep with a similar style of other badges with this "series" type format), and tried to make the design a bit less squished too. Thanks for all the great feedback so far!

Looks awesome to me! I think all of our needs for the badge have been met. Will leave it up to the rest of the Design Team to make any further adjustments / changes. :) Can't wait to see this one pushed!

I'd just give the logo a bit more breathing room in the bubble and I'd say we have a pretty sweet badge. I'd look at the clear space guidelines in the logo guide to determine just how much space - you could get away with 1/2 but if you need to go a bit tighter I trust your judgement:

https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Logo/UsageGuidelines#Clear_space

Hi mleonova, I made the logo a bit more pronounced (like in the pic you sent) Here it is!

I also attached the svg as well.

Hey! Cool =) That's not exactly what I meant though. I meant that the Fedora logo looks to me a bit compressed vertically: maybe at some point you didn't hold CTRL and it got distorted. Can you please fix that?

Ohhhh I get what you're saying, sorry I wasn't sure what you were referring to. I put the logo in again, and was made sure to resize proportionally.

@maryshak1996, thanks for all the work put in on this badge! I have a few thoughts. The badgers are too small, they minimum stroke width we try to go with is 1.5 except in special cases if it's working design wise. I am not sold on the clothes, hair and hat on the badgers. I think the design could be more successful with a badger and panda paired instead. For the numbering, please use the Comfortaa typeface. The bubbles behind the Fedora bubble look a bit crowded, and it is hard to discern what they are. If we want to turn this into a series, maybe it would be nice to start with one badger, with a bubble and the number 1. Then add on another bubble for 5 perhaps. Then add the panda and another bubble and so on. Lastly, I think that the badgers are getting lost on the dark background, or maybe the starburst mixed with everything else going on could be a little much. Maybe try out the background from this badge https://badges.fedoraproject.org/badge/bloggin-it%21-planet-i (without the stars)

riecatnor, thanks for the input, I'll see what I can do to take those things into consideration, and I'll repost with a new version(s) soon!

thought of a new idea; here's a rough idea of what I'm thinking (didn't finish, but wanted to post for opinions before I dedicate too much more time in). Thoughts?

@markshak1996, omg I love it!! I would like to see a version with the number "1" a little bit smaller. and perhaps just give a little more space between the edge of the background area and the speech bubbles. They look a little bit crowded right now

Love it! Can you make designs for the rest of the series based off this one? Thanks!! I'm thinking it should go 1, 5, 10, 25, 50

Great! Here's the variations for each number of the series (they are all roughly the same but with the different number and a slightly different "Dear Fedora" message)

Thanks so much for tackling this badge, maryshak1996! Really appreciate your time on these, they look great. :)

For future reference, once you add artwork to a badge, make sure to change the ticket status to "proposed" for ''Artwork status''. If one other design team member (other than the original designer) has +1'd a badge, it's good to set it as approved.

Even though this is a manually awarded badge right now. I don't think this should be kept as manually awarded badge in the long run.

Let's keep this issue open till the badge has been automated.

This badge, while having community outline, is categorized as content. I guess we should decide what's more important for this badge (I say content, but you can have different opinion) and stick with that. Also, the shape of the badge is slightly moved, so both pink outline and the shadow appear weird (especially when inline with other badges).

I don't believe this was formally approved by a design team member (there's "I love it", but that can go for the idea).

@sayanchowdhury: Are there any plans to integrate fedmsg into WordPress? If so, that would be of mutual interest to both this ticket and #51. Many months ago, we had brought it up in either #fedora-mktg or #fedora-apps, but the end discussion was that it wasn't something we were wanting to do. However, I know some new things have changed with WordPress in recent months, like the introduction of the RESTful API. If this is now possible, I would love to see fedmsg integration with the Magazine and Community Blog!! Where would be the right place to file an issue for this? In the Fedora Infra Trac or the fedmsg repo on GitHub?

@churchyard: Oops, yes… I probably jumped ahead on this one. I think it makes the most sense for this to be a content badge as well. If I have corrected artwork, I can fix it fairly easily.

Ok, let's go with a blue ring for this one. Also, the template may have gotten a little off when making the badges so go ahead and use a new template to make sure it's centered correctly. Also, can we see a version without the drop shadow in the text bubble? Thanks!
