#30 Tanked! Badge
Closed: Pushed None Opened 10 years ago by ryanlerch.

Proposing a new badge "Tanked!"

This is a simple one people get for attending the final party of flock 2013

Text could be something like "Attended the final party of Flock 2013 at the South Carolina Aquarium"

Calling for +1s, -1s on this badge before the party tonight.

I'm +1 on it. Fun!

My only problem w/ this is that people that are not attending or had to leave early will not be able to get it, other than that I'm +1 it's a fun badge :)

I see that as a feature! having badges like this is incentive to stay around for all of flock!

Like the art, but...

-1 for the following reasons:
No badges for the other two parties, and people can't control if they have to leave before Sunday night.
I stand by my previous statements that I will disagree with adding badges that are for both a one-shot event AND are for a specific thing at that one-shot event that people might not be able to go to, and also because people can't attend this virtually (unlike Flock 2013 in general), and I don't want to start having badges that are inaccessible due to time or money.
* Flock 2013 has been a great time, and it makes the Flock 2013 Attendee badge all the more valuable. If we start adding all sorts of badges for specific events at a specific event in a specific year, Badges will become cluttered with ultra-minor badges which show that you can drink a beer somewhere rather than valuable badges which show real achievements and skills. I simply don't like where this slippery slope might take us. Fedora Badges is about encouraging community participation in the development of Fedora, not about having a beer at an aquarium some night in Charleston.

I feel like I had more to say, but I can't remember what it was. Maybe I included it in an above bullet point. My main concern is and will remain that many badges will become impossible to get for many people who don't have the ability to attend, even if they'd really like to.

I don't see that so much as a feature. More like, "Oh, you have a job Monday morning? Or maybe you don't have the money to hang around for another day? Or maybe you live on another continent? That's a shame, you're not privileged enough to have the badge."

For many, having to leave is not a choice they get to make.

I think oddshocks made a really good case for not having this as a badge, for whatever it's worth.

So, the badge has already been added, but it can be removed. I want to make it clear that oddshocks' critique can be heard and acted on. I'll wait for more comments here for or against before proceeding.

While I agree this is a fun badge, and fun is important, I think that increasing the scarcity of badges ( ie, making one that you cannot have unless by being in a place in the past ) may frustrate some people who would feel they cannot be fully part of the community unless they are present in some specific events, which kinda make it "you had to be there". If people start to take seriously the badge system and if in 10 years, 20% of them cannot be received by a new comer, that doesn't sound very friendly.

I also share the concern of having too much micro badges.

So what about a more generic "attended a flock party" that can be awarded every year (and "attended flock" instead of "attended flock 2013") ?

This partially solve oddshocks's concern regarding people not having time this year, since that's not closed for them, and solve the issue of "too much micro badge".

I am also not a package maintainer, and I don't really have the skills and or time to be a package maintainer, hence i will never get any of the badges that are specific to being a package maintainer. So i am not privileged enough in my current situation to earn these badges?

IMHO, Fun badges like this that expire in a short period of time allow a user to look back over their period of involvement and remember their fun times with the fedora community. If you are worried about people not being able to get the 100% of badges, maybe badges of this type could not be included in a 100% count.

ryanlerch: part of the point of badges is to encourage you to do new stuff, though. I went to your inkscape tutorial ENTIRELY because it might help with badges, and today I actually managed to patch one of the badges in a very minor way: i learned stuff! the hope is that there being cool badges for being a package maintainer might push you to overcome the inconveniences in your way and become one, which would be good for Fedora.

I don't know if it's clear whether '100% attainable' is a goal of Badges or not - can someone say? If it is, then I'd agree that we should try and avoid date-specific badges entirely, and edit the 'attended Flock 2013' badge and so on as misc pointed out. But even if '100% attainable' isn't really a goal, and we're fine with having badges that will be simply impossible for some people to attain, oddshocks has a solid argument for why 'Attended Flock XXXX' is a good badge - it encourages people to do something which will be good for Fedora - but 'Attended a specific party at Flock XXXX' is gilding the lily. The parties are optional, at Flock; if you're a person who finds a party a good time they're there to make your Flock more enjoyable, but some people don't enjoy that environment and would prefer not to go, so for those people, the badge would not be driving them towards something good for Fedora that they'd probably enjoy, but just a motivator to go and do something they wouldn't enjoy doing much and would be of no direct benefit to Fedora.

'Presented at Flock', 'Helped someone at Flock', 'wrote something useful in a hackfest at Flock' - I think those kinds of things would be good 'sub-badges' for events if we were going to go in that direction. But 'went to a party at Flock' doesn't quite seem right.

Badges ARE. By DEFINITION. Things that not everybody gets. That's the whole point. You can't get FourSquare SXSW badges unless you're at SXSW. You can't get Founder's Hangouts in Untappd unless you go to a particular bar in NYC. I'm never going to get a badge for pushing 500 bodhi updates, and you know what? THAT'S OK. It's the whole point of badges.

Ralph and I spoke about this in person. First, let me clarify something: We already have a one-off badge: Devendorizor, which no one will besides those ~25 people will be able to get. We will have more, like one for those who participated in the Anaconda rewrite. The difference between these badges and this Tanked! badge is that the first two follow the Open Badges mantra of recognizing skills or achievements. The devendorization and Anaconda rewrite deserve recognition for those who participated. The Tanked! badge shows that you were still in Charleston and drank a beer at an aquarium. This difference in both achievement level and connection to Fedora contributions is what separates Devendorizor from Tanked!.

That being said, Ralph and I think we can solve this issue by tweeting/Facebooking/whatevering the link to the QR code for this badge, and let anyone around the world who's still paying attention to Flock 2013 to take part and gain a sweet badge for something cool that we did (going to an aquarium is pretty special and cool for a conference like this!). This resolves my major concern that folks are barred from a badge for reasons entirely out of their control. Anyone who's still with us can get this rad badge. :)

Can I get +1s or -1s for this resolution?

Thanks, everyone, for entertaining my concerns. :)

Maybe we have a difference in vision for Badges. :)

While I agree that the point of badges is to show achievements that perhaps not everyone else has done, there's a difference between your Bodhi update example and badges for afterparties: You ''could'' learn Bodhi and spend time pushing updates if you wanted the badge. In contrast, some might be entirely barred from earning a badge for attending an afterparty, and they couldn't do anything about it, no matter how much they want it, how much they're willing to learn, or how many hours they're willing to put in.

As a final note, Fedora Badges is not FourSquare or Untappd. It's not an application run by a company looking for people to use it for ad revenue or anything of the sort. It's for recognizing people who truly impacted our community in some way. We are far from FourSquare and Untappd.

Still looking for feedback on Ralph's and my resolution. :)

Yeah, it's not FourSquare. But it is still for fun. The badges don't mean anything. They're for fun. This is way too much hand-wringing over something completely meaningless that is just for fun.

I'm not -1 to that resolution - I still agree with you that the originally proposed badge is a bad one, for the reasons you stated very clearly - but it would seem to rather devalue the badge almost into meaninglessness: it's just a 'click here to get badge' badge. But if the choice is 'original proposal or comment #14', I vote for comment #14.

Ruth: I don't think it's too much hand-wringing, because it's touching on important topics. Badges aren't supposed to be 'meaningless' and they're not only 'for fun' (though they only work because they are fun); they're explicitly supposed to be a tool for encouraging people to do more good Fedora stuff, and it's explicitly supposed to be the case that badges should reward activity that, in some way, benefits the Fedora project. That's a Big Important Question, it's not just bikeshedding over a single badge.

I'm bummed that you think that our project is meaningless and "''just'' for fun." We put a lot of work into it because we believe that it's a truly meaningful way to recognize our fellow Fedorians for their work and skills.

The badges mean a lot. They mean that thousands of folks all over the world devoted parts of their '''lives''' to creating something free for other people.

IMHO, the parties are an integral part of the Fedora Conference structure. They facilitate a positive spirit of camaraderie between fedora community members that is not achieved through normal online interactions and conference activities. If they are as useless as people are eluding to, why have parties them at all?

That said, the initial idea of the badge came to me because i thought that the idea of having the flock farewell party at the aquarium was pretty awesome, and thought people would enjoy something to remember what i am sure will be an awesome party.

I'm not saying I think Badges isn't an awesome project. I love it. And it is a motivator--though obviously not for everyone, since the entirety of the responses so far on Facebook are, "I don't get it" and "What's the point?" But I personally love badges. I don't think they're a waste of time at all. I apologize if saying they were for fun implied that.

But is this proposed badge really that meaningful? Nope. Does every badge have to show some deep achievement? Nope. I agree with Ryan--a lot of what happens at any event happens outside of sessions. I've gotten so much done because I met someone I wouldn't have otherwise at a conference party or happened to meet them in a hallway. I'd even be willing to say I accomplish /more/ in those scenarios than the average listen-to-a-talk session. So does that mean going to a party deserves a badge? How about "talked to 50 Fedorans in the hallway"? No idea. I still think it's a bit hand-wringing to worry this much about it. Yes, they're motivational. But is anyone really going to cry in their virtual beers tonight because they aren't here and thus not getting that badge? That's where we've crossed the line from "fun" into "taking the badges way too seriously."

Looks like the "entirety" of confused Facebook responses is... 2 people out of 6 commentators and 56 likes. Seems like at least a few people dig it.

ruth: Oh sure, from that perspective, you're absolutely right, the question of this single badge is not a huge deal. I'm not going to cry into any beer whichever way the resolution goes. I just find the discussion and the larger questions raised really interesting. I think the larger concern we might have is that, with any rewards system like this, early works sets the trends: if we create too many frivolous badges too early, that might influence the direction of later badge creation. I think we'd be kind of sad to see it go down the path of 'here's a badge for submitting a package build at 12:34!' or something, rather than (as oddshocks and I have both said enough times...) 'here's a badge for doing something that makes Fedora better!' Personally I really hope we can keep the focus tight enough.

ryan: my take isn't that the parties are useless, just that they're explicitly optional, and I know for a fact some people just do not want or like to put themselves in that environment. I love the parties, and sure, I have productive and useful conversations at them. But I think if Flock happened with no official parties, the same people would probably wind up having the same conversations in a self-organized way. I may well be wrong, but my reading on parties at conferences is pretty much that when you have a few hundred people in an unfamiliar town without their families who need to eat, a bunch of them are going to wind up going out on the town every evening, and so conferences decided to make it an organized thing and get some sponsorship money out of it. It's just a way of organizing things that are going to happen anyway, and maybe keeping more of the people together than would otherwise be the case, and giving people who don't want to spend time figuring out where to eat and how to get there an easy answer.

(Yes, ruth, this is getting a bit hand-wringy, I honestly just wrote the above paragraph because I like to write this kind of thing out when it hits my brain :>)

I apologize for not committing to memory every Facebook comment I saw this morning while I was busy running a conference and then exercising a bit of verbal hyperbole. This is not a personal attack. I said I like badges. I just don't think that a full meltdown over someone suggesting a badge for going to a party is necessary. Why can't there be badges for being social instead of a quantifiable contribution of code? Is this really the most horrible thing that's ever happened? This thread sounds like the world might end if it's not possible for every person to earn every single badge, which isn't how badge systems are meant to work to begin with.

Adam--I assure you I didn't get any more sponsorship money by planning parties. In fact, they're incredibly expensive, but IMO the hardworking Flock attendees deserve to have fun at the end of the day.

Looks like the "entirety" of confused Facebook responses is... 2 people out of 6 commentators and 56 likes. Seems like at least a few people dig it.

Ok, I'm closing the ticket again. We're going to go ahead with the badge, bringing a qrcode to the party and tweeting the invite link (or whatever other means).

The longer discussion about what kinds of badges we will and won't have remains open but should happen outside of this ticket. FWIW, I'm of the opinion that we should determine (by election? by appointment?) a badge committee that either accepts or rejects submitted badge ideas/art/rules to streamline and simplify.

suehle: well, I did say I might be wrong :) thanks for the correction. I honestly think you're going overboard on the hyperbole again with talk of 'full meltdown' and 'most horrible thing that's ever happened' and 'world might end'. I'm enthusiastic about badges, and I like to write long thinky posts about things I'm excited about. oddshocks and ralph obviously are too. I honestly haven't seen any point where it seemed like anyone was getting overly crazy about it. It's just a passionate internet discussion, we have enough of those :)

I'm reopening this because this badge is slightly bigger than the others - it's noticeable on user profiles of users who've earned it. Need to scale down badge...

just for info, mo, I think ralph said he wants to track 'badges bugs' separately, but i'll talk to him tonight and straighten that out before i started closing out 'bug tickets'.
