#77 Please add an URL field
Closed: Fixed None Opened 10 years ago by cwickert.

Please add a field "URL". We need it to link to wiki pages about an event of link to the announcement mail for an outage and so on. TIA!

You can add the link in the description and even mark it as being a link via the markup syntax.

I do not see an added value for a specific URL field. Could you elaborate a bit more maybe?

Even if we switch from the "Events" page in the wiki to Fedocal, every event still '''must''' have a wiki page with further information. I think/hope that with a URL field, this becomes more clear. Basically my idea was to get things a little more structured: Instead of one large comment field we break down the content into smaller pieces that are consistent throughout all entries.

Then, if we can use an Event template as we do with Trac for example, there would be the URL to edit.

Even if an URL field is added, it won't be set as mandatory, as not every event requests that (only Ambassador events). Which makes me think about adding on description only.

I'm not quite sure why one would want to move the event page into Fedocal.

It's a calendar, why would you want to have all the information about the even in the description field. Is that something one would like to read on his/her phone?

It makes more sense to me to have a short description of the event and a link to the wiki page in the description field, which can be done already now.

I'm afraid there is a misunderstanding here.

The current wiki page at https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Events is hard to maintain. Just look at it: Some of the tables are sorted downwards, others upwards. Some regions have a different timeframe than others. Nobody cared to achieve old entries for 2 years.

We want to get rid of this page as soon as possible. First we were told that Fedora Insight would be the thing, then it was Fedocal. But so far, the ambassadors have nothing that really matches their requirements.

The calendar in Fedocal is not meant to replace the individual event pages but only the overview tables. In fact, we still need individual wiki pages for planning, and I am afraid that with

But we still want individual wiki pages for every event and I'm afraid that without an URL field, people will forget the link. Or they will not use markup. Look into the calendar how many people actually did this – I wasn't able to find a single link but only URLs. And most people add not even a URL, even if it was useful. I'm sure with a custom field it would be more.

I know. The reason to split things up into certain, recurring fields is to give the events a consistent structure. We could make things like "Region" or even the meeting organizer free text in the description, too, but we would loose structure. URL even is part of the ical specs.

Anyway, I think I have explained my case and it is on you decide if you implement it or not. I will accept your decision and appreciate you consider my idea. Thanks!

Ok now I understand better the RFE.

Just to mitigate a little the lack of markup used, it's only present since the last two releases which are rather recent.

I looked into the ical specification regarding the URL field thinking that it would be indeed very nice to have it there, but that's unfortunately not what this field is for apparently:
http://tools.ietf.org/search/rfc5545#section-3.8.4.6

So I'll have to concatenate the link in the description.

I was wondering if it would make sense to create a template structures for events (or probably other), this way we could pre-populate the description field.

Thanks for the RFE, I'll keep it in mind for the next release.

Thinking a little more about this, what about a 'Wiki page' field in the form which would then be added into the description at the end in something like: "\n\nMore information can be found at <url_formated in markdown>".

What do you think?

It would provide some emphasis about the wiki page and just be added to the description and then be present in the iCal feeds and all.

I think the best way for ambassadors would be to provide a fedocal description template that people use when creating events (so that they don't forget to provide the URL). This description concatenating breaks for example any localization (you can't have a Spanish calendar for the Spanish community and then append English text to the description).

However, since we already have the field, I propose at least this improvement:
Can the "Wiki page" field be renamed to "More information URL" or something similar? Because it's a bit confusing at the moment, it implies that only wiki page URLs can be specified (which is not true, I hope). With the proposed new name, it's also clearer that the link will be appended to the description with some "more information at" text.
