%defattr() is only required for rpm < 4.4. EL5 has 4.4.2. It is not mentioned as being required by the EPEL 5 guidelines
Current code only for %defattr being present although not required, it does not enforce the use of %defattr on obsoleter rpm < 4.4. Closing.
